Costa del Sol

The higher segment, with an economy no longer running on tourism alone

From Málaga to Estepona lies the best-known stretch of coast in Spain. Where the area once lived mainly on sun and tourism, Málaga has grown into a technology city in ten years. That changes who lives there, who rents, and what a property is worth outside the season.

Why this area

Málaga: the largest airport in southern Spain

Year-round direct flights from across Europe, and several a day from the Netherlands. The airport handles more than twenty million passengers a year, making it one of the best-connected destinations in the Mediterranean.

A tech hub that attracts talent

Google, Vodafone and TDK have opened research and development centres there. That brings well-paid, international residents who rent year-round: a different and steadier rental market than the summer rush.

Public transport is being extended

Málaga's metro keeps growing and there are plans to extend the coastal railway towards Marbella and Estepona. A home that will be within walking distance of a station is a different proposition from one where you always need the car.

Quality over volume

Less is built here, and at higher prices, with more emphasis on architecture, finish and amenities. If you want a home that stands out rather than a standard complex, you are more likely to find it here.

The mildest winter on the mainland

Sheltered by the mountains, winter temperatures sit a little higher here than further north along the coast. Golf, terraces and walking work as well in December as in May.

A city worth going into

Málaga has museums, an old town and a food scene that runs all year. That makes the area attractive if you are after more than the beach.

Not sure which area suits you?

It depends on your budget, how often you want to be there and whether you plan to rent it out. One conversation is usually enough to find out.
